still refining my turtle project for risis.
set of three. three is a good number is chinese, sounds like “alive” also represents harmony and the trinity of the earth, people, and the sky.
want to incorporate some type of water element. turtles have a strong symbolic relationship with it. can be literal -water- or something like a mirror.
am considering using the shape of chinese money as inspiration. square-earth, inside of round-sky. maybe. kinda of with the turtle as universe, but changes how, so i dunno.
can’t decide if the turtles should all be the same size.. if i follow the “fu lu shou” (3 symbols for good fortune, prosperity, longevity look like 3 old men) idea, they maybe should be the same size. with 3 individual designs that hold additional meaning. or they could stack inside each other and also have a variety of appearances. or stack on top. or some other way…
i am focusing on design first, and then function later. apparently i am too functional in my design process, so we’ll see how this goes.

I came across this video while reading a book on nature design (well the video wasn’t in the book obviously, but whatever), it is pretty interesting reversal of idea of putting technology(even fake tech) into nature instead of nature into tech.. or maybe its the other way around, which ever.
I like the concept of technology that doesn’t really accomplish anything. Like it simulates what natural elements r doing but itself gains nothing from it.. there is something refreshing about technology being pointless instead of tryin to solve the worlds problems..

In my photographic search for fountains I came upon some fish tanks. Anyone not fascinated by fish tanks can stop reading now…
I saw this tank in a fish store in the mall. The store specializes in algae and mini shrimp for home fish tanks. Their tanks had some very impressive plants ecosystems going on. They also had an interesting variety of non aggressive fish. Like almost interesting ones.. haha.I really like this super skinny catfish guy.
The only reason the lil black and white guy is included is b/c he was the sole inhabitant of a 2,000 gallon tank. He was about 2 inches long. A very lucky fish who demonstrates the sometimes absurd water usage in this place.

So my prof. said something very interesting about visual noise. Like how designing something for use in Singapore is different than say Canada. Singapore is very densly populated and it has a lot of “visual noise.” To be honest this concept had never really ever occured to me before, but I think it is very pertinent to my design. How can I attract people in a world that is heavily saturated with visual stimulation..?…

-so my idea didn’t get shot down, so on to stage two.
-connections: public to private space. neighbor to neighbor. interior space to exterior space. confined to open. tense atmosphere to relaxed atmos.
-object that brings people together, promotes social usage, and creates connections.
-find out what people are drawn and sustains their attention.
-trash? neg. vs potentially positive aspects of trash collection. attractive vs. repulsive trash.
-heat. or cooling. or drinks. bribing people to come near.
-an object for huddling around or sitting around. inside or outside.
these are really random thoughts, sorry if they are a little hard to follow.
saw watchmen yesterday. it was hilarious.
“i’m not stuck in here with you, your stuck in here with me!” -Rotheshack. This idea could work for my project. Turning the tables on seemingly confining environments, how people view space. Flip a neg. connotation into a positive or reverse negative. Make people sacrifice their beloved personal space for something better. connection.

So my project is slowly morphing into something else.
During my last(and only) consult with my teachers, they tired to steer me in the direction of something “country”. i think i just need to repitch the porch. i can’t bring myself to do “country”, as i am not from the “country”.
the porch is fairly america specific. ben franklin invented the rocking chair after all. i am currently searching for cultural equivalents on the other continents.
i am interested in the porch as a connection point. a way to become involved in your environment. your neighborhood.
maybe the word porch is throwing it off. here ppl live almost exclusivly in high rises, but they has public space downstairs where the sit and chat. what would that be called? i know want to focus on the domestic environment.
i think my solution will focus on revamping this connection in an era of television, sky rises, and ac. we shall see..
possible activites.. sitting, smoking, reading, cards, drinking, talking, sleeping..

Prawn=shrimp. well jumbo shrimp with big as claws.
check out pics here. scroll down.
so I caught around six prawns in three hours. not quite as efficient as a caste net, but much more fun.
did i mention that these were pre-caught prawns. we fished out of a giant bucket basically. it was awesome.
we barbe-qed them with salt and it was yummy.
thanks to yxy for taking us along! * *
