Risis Ideation

possible object one: cell phone/mp3 holder. ok i know that sounds lame, but gadget accessories are very popular here. it also fits the requirement of something that can help advance risis’ collection into the future(technology world). it is also something that you can give a man other than a money clip. if i use the turtle tablets(turtle that carries a large vertical tablet) as form inspiration it could  look pretty cool. at least it be symbolic of something not quite so trivial. work with me here. but how to fit in social commentary? maybe it could be an like an shrine for your cell phone. the turtle, represents longevity of battery life. hahaha.

possible object two: turtle-iggy bank.  this one is a bit literal. you feed the turtle instead of feeding on the turtle. he gives you good fortune and longevity when you keep his belly full. tiffanys has some really nice looking piggy banks made out of silver. so it is possible to market this as a nice gift item. form naturally lends itself to being a container.

possible object three: candle holder with holes in the shell that let light escape like stars. relates to how the turtle is a minature universe. and how its shell used to be used for divination. very simple object. incense are a more asian concept than candles, but i don’ t think they fit the risis  brand. plus they stink.

other possiblities mirror compact, jewelry box.

trying my best to keep it interesting. for this project I think I am going to stick to simple pleasures(silliness) in order to stay sane and in the game.

This is a link to the website of Tbolt pictures. Tbolt is an awesome up and coming film production company, whose work I think is really original and interesting. They are a small no frills operation- -whose prices are ridiculously cheap- -that create really elegant pieces of  art in motion..

Tbolt films is a group of Atlanta based films makers who specialize in making  creative, aesthetically impressive and innovative shorts, music videos, and feature length films. They also have the capabilities to produce all of the necessary supplementary 2-D design pieces – promotional posters, graphics, websites, etc.

I really hope that you will check out their website and consider them for any of your video needs.

I usually don’t use my blog as an advertisement space(well usually I do a lot of self advertisement, but that doesn’t count. ) but I am really a fan of this company and their ideals. They really have a lot of raw talent and passion and I wish them the best of luck in the future!

totally awesome. got to meet the guy who collected them all. man after my own heart. also had over 3,000 turtle inspired gift items, so it was also good research for my studio project.

Product or Object?

what’s the difference?

we like to call ourselves product designers. not purveyors of objects.

why do objects have a negative connotation? like objectifying women/men.you can’t productify someone. it would imply that you wanted to package and sell them, not that they were just things.

the word “product” places more emphasize on positives, like being productive and creating jobs and stimulating economies.  products are the fruit of someones hard labor. we sympathize with them. and love them.

whenever designers get disillusioned they start to hate on all of the “objects” that they encounter. they no longer see the productive process, the path towards empowering civilisations, enlightening users, etc..

they dehumanize the human creations. the objects don’t become evil, or conniving, or hateful, they simply lose all of their humanity. things. its. trash.

objects are created by us.  naturally occurring things like stones (colloquially at least) are not considered objects. manmade objects they are the unwanted children.no one claims to have ever loved them. they are unhip. their creation has been deemed undivine. but (vaguely blasphemous catholic ref.) don’t you have to love all of gods(our) creations? doesn’t everything have a higher purpose? I like to think so.

how can you take a predesigned object and productify them back into our good gracies? trash i give you soul.

yeah anyway. i dunno. just a thought.

ok so i promised to blog about my studio over here so ya’ll could know whats up worldwide. i know i have not been doing this. i am very aware of this factoid. it is just hard to write it all down, i dunno.  but don’t think i forgot. it will get down, and here it starts.

we have crit with the rep.’s from the company(risis) we are designing for this monday. i have been doing a lot of brainstorming for this project but i haven’t really found anything that both fulfills the companies requirements and gets  me excited.

I might have figured that out just now.

so turtles are an important part of asian culture.(((as someone who always is on the lookout for random turtle items to purchase, i have noticed, in general, turtles are much more prevalent here. ))

they are found in ancient medicine, history, mythology, religions…

they represent longevity and strength.

so this makes them a valid choice for my risis project.

but this was only regurgitated info and so my heart was not quite excited about this (regardless of my obsession with t’s).

conservation. a product that tells the positive story of turtles in history, but also their current critical state. a message of awareness and hope. turtles as a symbol for longevity of the gift recipient and their connection with nature. the connection that has to be recognized in order for longevity. circle of lfe business.

this makes me more interested. bringing risis into a new era of product lines. promoting asian tales and conservation of it’s natural resources.

now to search for precedents in environmental awareness. trick is not being preachy or depressing. look at products made from turtles. gotta stay positive so my aspiration screams buy me not feel guilty.

so there’s a tidbit. stay tuned.

So the construction here is insane. It runs around the clock. The projects that they undertake here are huge compared to our dinky condo development in Atl. I can’t even imagine the logisitics or managementness required to keep it all under control…

Back After Brief Hiatus

So I am back to writing again. I was a little burnt out on this blogging business. I find blogging a little emotionally tiresome at times. It can be hard to force yourself to put yourself out there. I am often embrassed at my own honesty. very often. But alas, at the same time I am unable to keep my mouth shut(well keyboard, but whatever really), so here goes again. full frontal. balls to the wall, so to speak.

Studio is really wearing me out. I have learned that what I previously believed to be indecisive behavior of the part of an instructor, was relatively down right… firm. I feel like have spent the last four weeks going around in circles.. Iterative is one thing, but here it seems much more like search and destroy(I search and they destroy).  The best advice I have received from the local studio kids is to just ignore the conflicting suggestions and just do your own shit. This is weird for me. I am always up for suggestions, but then again usually they set me on a good path, not push me backwards..

I guess this semester is going to be a good exercise in self-discipline. I am going to have be inspired to create independently…  I have to control my usual not so productive method of ideation(too heavy on contemplation, not so heavy on creation) and drag myself along my own path. We shall see what I get up to.

I have been fairly inspired so far at least. This environment really sets me in the right mood. I even already have a list of stuff to do once I get stateside again and have some space.  I have the ideas, so I need to get down to the translation. that is the fucking trick.
